My Bedroom: Olivia Munn

It’s a place for relaxation and romance—and, above all, order

Actress Olivia Munn’s design aesthetic can be described as follows: “I hate clutter.”

She says this while perched atop a floral-print Ektorp couch deep in the bowels of the Burbank Ikea. We have come here to find two items—a tray and a nightstand—to finish off her bedroom. Up to this point, Munn’s mostly been clowning around: “You’re not legally allowed to shoot raccoons with a BB gun,” she tells an unwitting Ikea clerk at the information desk. “You can shoot squirrels, though, so we’re looking for a place to store them, like a tray. Can you direct us?”

But when I bring up clutter, the 26-year-old star of G4’s Attack of the Show! turns serious.

“I grew up in a military family, and everywhere we went, we collected stuff,” she says. “There were knickknacks all over the place, all those little ceramic houses lined up like you were in a store.” As a consequence, Munn’s bedroom—and, actually, her entire home—is all about order. Consider . . .

“You can use all the pillows on my bed. There are no throw pillows. I don’t like to have crap you throw on the floor. And there’s nothing under my bed.”

 “In my closet, all my clothes are folded, color-coordinated, and facing in the same direction. It looks like Gap.”

“Everything in my house has its place. That way I know it’s not clutter.”

“If you look in my refrigerator, you’ll see that everything is lined up. You can read all the labels.”

Obsessive? Hell yeah, and proud of it. When Munn first moved into her Hollywood Hills home, everything in the ­bedroom was wood. “Nothing matched,” she says. “It looked like the place wood went to die. One day, I invited my brother over, and we moved all the wood out and everything I wanted in.” She’d like to redesign your bedroom, too. (You’ll love it! She promises!) But it’s a big country, and her brother is busy. So instead, allow her to offer the following wisdom.

1. Edit your photos: Family portraits are great—in the family room. “Bedroom photos should only show people who actually sleep there,” Munn says. “What if you’re having sex and you look up and see a picture of your niece? That’s creepy!” Even creepier: “I had a boyfriend who always kept the bedroom door open. One day I closed it, and there was a picture of him and his ex-girlfriend hanging there. That’s a big no-no!”

2. Think “second drawer”: “Every guy has a sex drawer, but does it have to be the top drawer of the nightstand?” asks Munn. “That’s such a cliché. Either go all out and have a tray of sex toys out in the open—you know, own it—or hide them a little better.”

3. Curb your pooch: “If your dog is in the bedroom, you’re not getting laid,” says Munn. “When a guy lets his dog sleep in his bed, I think he can’t control anything. On the other hand, there’s something very sexy about a guy who has a well-trained dog. It suggests he has control of his life.”

4. Don’t give in to her every demand: You’re hot. She’s cold. Who wins?  You do. “I’m always cold, but it’s easier to warm up than cool down,” Munn says. “Men shouldn’t always do what women want.” Hear! Hear!

5. Never wake the princess: And above all: “When the woman you’re with is sleeping, let her sleep!” says Munn. “I hate when a boyfriend wakes me up and is like, Do you want to go to breakfast? No, of course not! I’m sleeping!”
